On Caturday: an extraordinary cat story.
When the Squires family of Boulder, Colorado, lost their cat Willow five years ago, they feared for the worst. With the coyotes and owls prowling the Rocky Mountain area in mind, they eventually gave up hope, and moved on. But Wednesday, they got an unexpected and unbelievable phone call: Willow had been found. Not in a nearby mountain town or in Denver, but on the streets of Manhattan, 1,800 miles from home.
The calico cat, picked up on East 20th Street, was brought into a New York City animal shelter and identified by a microchip implanted in her when she was a kitten. How she made the long journey east is a mystery, but it doesn’t seem like she’s been living the hard life: she is well fed and groomed.
Julie Bank, Executive Director of Animal Care and Control of NYC, which runs the City’s shelter system, recommended that all pet owners have their animals implanted with microchips. Willow’s story, which ranks among the most amazing animal treks, is a terrific endorsement.
